My name is Rich, and I like telling stories. I love combining my passions for motion, music and design to entertain, educate, and make ideas breathe. I’m obsessed with digital media that captures imaginations, inspires change, and makes the world a better place - or a little more fun.

I’m a nature fanatic, an avid runner, a recent Digital Design graduate from the University of Cincinnati's DAAP program, and a full-time Designer/Animator in beautiful San Francisco, CA.

Project Description

"The NEAT Choice: Daily Decisions for a Healthy, Active Lifestyle in Adults" was my undergraduate senior thesis project as a Digital Design major in the college of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) at the University of Cincinnati.

A majority of American adults are overweight and exercising insufficiently. Poor fitness habits are largely attributed to lifestyle barriers, mainly the negative perception of exercise as too time consuming.

This project aims to alter this perception through an educational YMCA campaign that features daily decisions (outside of typical fitness programs) promoting and supplementing an active lifestyle. The Clifton Melrose Branch in Cincinnati, OH is used as a case study.

Post Production

I joined the post-production team for this company-wide effort while interning at Superfad (Summer 2010). Working on sharp deadlines, I assisted lead compositors Adrian Winter and Chris Lohouse with hefty portions of rotoscoping and green screen work, as well as basic color correction and compositing.

It was a great opportunity to be included on such a large team, and I learned a lot about the intra-company politics of task delegation. The promo was featured in 30 and 15 second versions on the Food Network channel in Summer 2010.

Animated pitch for the University of Cincinnati's Digital Design DAAPWorks senior show branding identity (Spring 2011). The branding, design, and concept were created within a team of 7 other classmates.

The "We Are" concept speaks to the diversity of the Digital Design major, and the individuals that put a face behind the broad spectrum of all that is digital design.

Concept + Development

This promotional video, created with a team of 3 other classmates, supports a student-created organization called PUSH Design, advocating that Design is more than aesthetic - it's problem solving, critical thinking, and communication. The video was displayed in conjunction with other student projects in our school's main atrium.

I served as team leader, assistant videographer, and head of post-production (compositing, animation, compiling). From 0:48 - 1:25 is the segment I produced in its entirety.

Style Boards

The theme for this assignment was "Change in American Culture."
My target audience was young musicians (age 12 - 20), specifically guitarists. My goal was to educate and inspire these young musicians by illustrating how guitarist Eddie Van Halen revolutionized the Rock community in America (and worldwide) with his 'two-handed tapping' technique.

I tried to cater to this younger audience with fun animation, narration, and overall style. I had a blast bringing the idea to life.

Rock on!!

This educational animation was intended to be part of a hypothetical exhibit for the Boston Museum of Science entitled, "How Things Work." The assignment, completed with a classmate, was to utilize and improve upon a pre-existing article/diagram published in the 1963 German manual by author C. van Amerongen, also entitled "How Things Work."

Host For Good is a new movement to help anyone throw an event for charities with "Events in a Box." It's good for goodness' sake!

I had the opportunity to bring this concept to life with motion from the ground up. I wrote/recorded/narrated the script, and designed/produced the entire animation. I had a lot of fun working with Torsten Gross, one of the innovators who founded the non-profit.

This video/concept is competing to win a grant from the Pepsi Refresh campaign starting November 1st.

DESIGN WAS HERE

[ studio ] - DAAP
[ client ] - N/A

[ role ] -
Director
Audio Design
Graphics Animation
Narrative Development
Camera Assistance

This project, completed with a group of six other classmates, was a big, fun step into full-on video production for me. The assignment was broad - create a motion piece that educates non-designer youth about Design in an interesting, entertaining way. Our solution was a humorous narrative aimed at emphasizing the importance of design in everyday life, suggesting that often the most important Designs in life are taken for granted.

My biggest roles were production, concept, and leadership - I served as shooting/project Director, lead post-production animator/compositor, and sound designer.

ANCHORMAN: TRAILER RECUT

[ studio ] - DAAP
[ client ] - N/A

The assignment was to create a trailer that changed the theme, mood, and overall genre of an existing movie. I chose to transform "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy" from comedy to suspense/murder thriller.

I began by crafting a new story for the movie, choosing clips and sound bytes as narrative support. I utilized jump cuts and crossfades to structure new connections and build suspense, and created a dark mood via color correction and a new soundtrack (source credit to Hans Zimmer).
