ABOUT THE MUSIC

I like many different kinds of music, and I tend to add a little bit of everything with songs I write.  You can surely expect retro/classic rock styles, heavy metal, alternative rock, and blues, but I like to experiment so maybe you’ll be surprised.  You’ll also see my softer side with some emotional or soundscape pieces.  I’ve also been delving into some orchestral pieces.  I don’t believe in stylistic  limitations – I want to express myself for all kinds of emotions.

TECH NOTES

As of June 2010, I record with the following equipment:

- ’06 MacBook Pro laptop (Logic Express ’09)

- Lexicon Alpha external recording soundcard

- Shure SM57 mic

- Ibanez TM71 Artcore Talman Semi-hollow Electric Guitar

- Brownsville Bass

I would love to buy a small drum kit, learn how to drum properly, and lay down my own percussion tracks, but that’s looking into the future when I’ll have the money and space to accomplish that.

HISTORY

Piano

My formal introduction to music began in first grade when my parents started me with piano lessons.  I played piano for 8 years, and didn’t enjoy it much.. it felt forced and restrictive.  But when I came across songs I really liked, I loved to play – I was quite fond of memorizing songs and throwing the piano book aside.  This formed my foundation for music theory.

Singing

Nothing beats singing along to favorite songs, whether it be through a stereo or a live band. I’ve always loved to sing, and this is where my musical interest really began.  I sang in a choir in junior high, and was lead singer for my first two bands.

————————————

Guitar

On my 16th birthday I received a very important gift – an old acoustic guitar my Mom had spruced up for me.  I slowly began to learn, and quickly switched to electric guitar, which was what I really loved.  The guitar has changed my life, and I absolutely love it.  I’ve been rocking ever since.

Bands

I’ve been in 3 bands for most of my life since my sophomore year of high school.  First, I was lead singer for the classic rock cover band the Urban Nomads; next, I was lead singer and rhythm guitarist for the half classic rock cover, half original songs Axology; and finally, I sing and play guitar for my current band Elixir, a party rock cover band.  I absolutely love playing live music, and hope to be in a band all my life.

Songwriting

My interest in writing lyrics developed very early in my life – I’ve always enjoyed creative writing.  I began journaling in 5th grade, I wrote fantasy stories in elementary school and handed them out to my friends, I wrote poetry for personal satisfaction and competitions in junior high and high school, and began writing song lyrics in early high school. I still enjoy and practice all these kinds of writing.

In terms of song composition – melodies, techniques, arrangements, etc – I consider myself pretty new to this.  I wrote a few songs for my second band, Axology, but songwriting has mostly been a personal endeavor within the last year or so.  I still have so much to learn, and that is both motivating and exciting!

Recording

Finally, recording is my most recent musical endeavor.  I’m pretty much a total n00b to recording, but am slowly learning proper techniques.  It’s really hard to record music on an extremely limited budget, but I’m having a blast right where I am in my recording development.  It’s such a complicated yet exciting endeavor with so many things involved.  It can be extremely frustrating, and it drains me… but it’s so rewarding, and of course, a blast!
